A year ago, we started a collaboration called the International Freezing Cold Injury (FCI) Working Group with the aim of improving outcomes from frostbite globally. The Group currently has representatives from of about ten countries.
The plan a three stranded approach:
1. For the Public
To increase public awareness by informing interested groups, in particular climbers, skiers and those at particular risk.
a. To have a website with information about prevention and treatment of cold injuries.
b. To set up an open access list of interested clinicians who are familiar with and see / advise on cold injuries.
c. To set up an open access list of hospitals that can provide frostbite treatment for more severe injuries.
2. For Interested Clinicians– a list of clinicians with an interest in managing FCI, their contact details and locations.
3. Frostbite Treatment Providers - a list of units where there is multidisciplinary expertise in the management of more severe frostbite injuries. They will have access to complex imaging and the administration thrombolytic/vasodilator therapies. With regards to the required facilities in the UK and Ireland, this could include most major vascular hubs, but a key question is whether there is a clinician with a particular interest in FCIs.
This website, which is currently under development, will have access to information, links to resources for the public, links for people who have sustained frostbite and links for health care workers involved in the assessment and treatment of frostbite.
